Newborn Photographer Coventry: 5 Questions to Ask Before You Book

If you’re expecting a baby and starting to look for a newborn photographer in Coventry or Warwickshire, you’ve probably already realised there are a lot of options out there. And if you’re anything like most parents I speak to, you might be thinking: “They all look lovely… how do I actually choose?”

The truth is, newborn photography is one of those areas where experience and approach really matter - not just for the final images, but for your baby’s comfort and safety too.

So here are five questions I always recommend asking before you book (and yes, even if it’s not with me!).

1. How is my baby’s safety handled during the session?

This is the most important one. Newborns are delicate, and a good photographer will always work in a way that is: ❖ gentle ❖ baby-led ❖ and never rushed If you’ve seen certain poses online where babies appear to be holding themselves up, it’s absolutely worth asking how those are created. A professionally trained newborn photographer will always ensure that: ❖ baby is fully supported at all times ❖ poses are appropriate for their development ❖ nothing is forced or uncomfortable If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts - you’re absolutely allowed to ask questions.

2. What training and experience do you have with newborns?

Newborn photography is very different to photographing older children or families. It’s not just about using a camera - it’s about understanding: ❖ how to handle and position a newborn safely ❖ how to read their cues ❖ how to keep them settled and comfortable This is where experience really comes into its own. I’ve been specialising in newborn photography since 2007, and over the years I’ve developed a calm, flexible, baby-led approach that works around each individual baby.

3. What happens if my baby won’t settle?

This is a big worry for a lot of parents - especially first-time mums. The reality is… babies don’t follow a plan 😄A good newborn session should allow plenty of time for: ❖ feeding ❖ settling ❖ cuddles ❖ little breaks whenever needed There should never be pressure on your baby to “perform”. Some of the most beautiful images actually come from those quieter, in-between moments.

4. Can parents, siblings (or even dogs!) be included?

Every photographer works slightly differently, so it’s always worth checking what’s included. For me, your session isn’t just about baby on their own - it’s about your growing family. That means: ❖ parent images ❖ sibling images ❖ and yes, dogs are very welcome too (always handled safely) Those are often the photographs that become the most meaningful over time.

5. What happens after the session?

This is something many people don’t think to ask - but it makes a big difference to your overall experience.

Things to check:

How and when will you see your images? Some photographers will have you back at a later date to choose your images during an in-person sales experience, some (like me) will send a proofing gallery of watermarked low resolution files from which you select your purchase.Are images included, or chosen afterwards? Some photographers ask for full payment up front for a chosen package, others will charge a deposit which is deducted from a final package price and some, (myself included) charge a separate session fee and then later your chosen package price.Is there any pressure to buy? Most photographers I know will have a minimum spend, and a professional photographer should share their pricing with you beforehand to ensure there are no nasty surprises. I keep everything very simple and transparent: Your session with me is secured with the session fee (£60), a week to ten days after your session you view your draft images in the comfort of your own home and choose only what you love. Once you've paid for your chosen package your finalised, beautifully hand edited images will be delivered to you.No pressure, no hard sell, just a relaxed experience designed to work around busy new parents.
