A common worry I hear from parents is: “My baby was born early, we're only just out of hospital - have we missed the chance for newborn photos?” The simple answer is no - you haven’t missed out at all!
Most newborn photographers recommend booking your session within the first two to three weeks after your due date. At this age, babies are usually very sleepy, curl up naturally, and are happiest being swaddled or gently posed. That’s why this time is often referred to as the “newborn window” for photography.
But what happens if your little one makes an early appearance and their subsequent neonatal care means that this window is missed?

Understanding Chronological vs Corrected Age
Let’s imagine your baby was born three weeks early. By the time they are five weeks old chronologically, their corrected age is only two weeks. In other words, developmentally they are more like a brand new two-week-old and still very much in that newborn stage.
That means if your baby arrived early, we often have a little more time to capture those sleepy, curled-up images that parents love. A five-week-old baby born three weeks early will often still behave like a two-week-old born at term.
This is also true for twins, who are almost always born a little early. In my experience, this often means we have a longer window to capture those precious newborn-style photographs.

What to expect in your session
Remember that every baby is different, and that’s something I love about newborn photography. Whoever said all newborns are the same obviously has never worked with new babies! Some of my tiny models will sleep deeply and settle easily into gentle posing, while others are more curious and wakeful, even at just a few days old.
At whatever age, if your little one is alert during the session, that’s absolutely fine. Wide-awake photographs are just as special and full of personality. My priority is always your baby’s safety and comfort. I’ll never force a pose, and I will work entirely at your baby’s pace.
It’s also important to say that not every parent or baby is ready for a session in the first couple of weeks, especially after a complicated birth, caesarean recovery, or if your baby has spent time in special care. Please don’t worry if you need that little bit of extra time, that is absolutely fine by me! I’ll happily photograph babies who are several weeks old, and you’ll still come away with beautiful images to treasure.
Traditional newborn poses, lifestyle images, and family inclusions
With almost two decades of experience as a newborn photographer covering Coventry, Warwickshire and the surrounding areas, I’ve worked with hundreds of families and have proven skills in both traditional newborn posing and relaxed, natural lifestyle-style images.
This combination means that, even if your baby is a little older or more alert, you’ll still come away with a stunning gallery of photographs. Traditional sleepy poses are wonderful when possible, but I also love capturing those real, heartfelt family moments, wide-eyed gazes, cuddles with parents, or siblings proudly holding their new baby.
And of course, the family dog is also warmly welcomed to my studio, as I have become well known for my newborn with dog photography!
Photographing generations together, or including beloved pets, results in some of the most meaningful images for families. Safety is always my top priority, (especially when working with newborns and animals) but with my careful planning and practised Photoshop magic, these sessions create the most amazing and magical memories.

In conclusion - please don't worry!
Parents of early babies often tell me how relieved they are to learn that we still have plenty of time. Yes, you will still get those beautiful images to cherish, whether your baby snoozes peacefully throughout the session or gifts us with wide-eyed expressions.
Your session will always be calm, relaxed, and tailored around your little one. My goal is for you to enjoy the experience just as much as the final photographs.
