If you’re expecting a baby, one of the exciting things to plan ahead for is your newborn photography session. Many parents ask “when is the best time to book?” – and the answer is as early as possible, ideally while you are still pregnant.
Newborn photography sessions are best undertaken before baby is two weeks old. During these first few days babies tend to be sleepier, and they are much more likely to settle into the gentle, curled up poses that really showcase just how tiny and new they are. Those beautiful, timeless images you see of babies snugly wrapped or posed on soft blankets are most easily achieved when baby is under 14 days old.
That said, please don’t worry if that window of opportunity passes. Sometimes a stay in hospital is longer than expected, or mum and dad just need a little longer before they feel ready for a session – and that is completely understandable.
As an experienced Coventry newborn photographer with nearly two decades of experience, I’ve photographed babies at all stages up to twelve weeks of age. Older newborns are absolutely still welcome in the studio – we simply adapt the session to suit your baby’s stage of development.
Once baby is a little more alert, I tend to take a more lifestyle-focused approach. These sessions are incredibly special because we can capture lots of beautiful wide-eyed expressions, and the way baby interacts with mum and dad. If baby does doze off, don’t worry – I always take the opportunity to capture some lovely sleepy images too!

Top Tips for Preparing for Your Newborn Session
Here are a few simple ways to help your session run smoothly:
• Book early – Ideally book during pregnancy to secure your place in my diary. We’ll provisionally book your session for around your due date and confirm once baby is here.
• Keep baby cosy and well-fed – A sleepy baby is a happy baby! A little feed just before the session helps them relax and settle.
• Avoid tight clothing before the session – Loose-fitting sleepsuits help to prevent any red marks on baby’s skin.
• Relax and enjoy the experience – I’ll gently guide you through everything. My studio is fully equipped with comfy seating, baby changing facilities and plenty of time – so there’s never any rush.

Whether your little one arrives on time or keeps you waiting, the most important thing is that your session is a positive and enjoyable experience. With nearly twenty years’ experience photographing Coventry’s newest arrivals, I’ll always tailor the session to suit your baby’s needs – whatever their age.
If you’d like to reserve a space in my diary or ask any questions, feel free to get in touch – I’d love to hear from you!
