The Art of Photographing Dogs in the Studio

There’s an old saying in photography: “Never work with children or animals.”
Well… I do both – and I absolutely love it!
Photographing dogs in the studio is one of the most joyful, hilarious, and rewarding parts of my work. Having spent my teenage years at the National Canine Defence League in Kenilworth (now Dogs Trust), where my mum was the manageress, I’ve been around dogs for a very long time. My early experiences means I’m completely at ease working with all sorts of temperaments, sizes, and personalitiesm, and they seem quite at ease with me too.
If you're looking for a friendly, experienced dog photographer in Warwickshire, you’re in the right place.

Letting Dogs Settle (Just Like Toddlers!)
When a dog arrives at my studio, the very first thing I do is… nothing.
Just like toddlers, dogs need a moment to:
• Sniff around
• Explore the space
• Suss out the strange lady making silly noises
• Get comfortable with their new surroundings
A relaxed dog is a photogenic dog, so I always allow plenty of time for settling in. Rushing never works - patience does.
This gentle, dog-led approach is one reason families choose me for dog and pet photoshoots near Coventry, Solihull, and Warwickshire.

Camera Settings for Moving Tails, Wiggly Bottoms & Nose Boops
Dogs don’t sit still for long, so my camera settings are chosen specifically with movement in mind.
Autofocus (Nikon)
I shoot using AF-C (continuous autofocus). This mode continuously tracks and adjusts focus as your dog moves - perfect for unpredictable subjects who might go from sitting beautifully to bounding across the studio in half a second.
Shutter Speed & Flash: What Actually Freezes Motion
Here’s a little behind-the-scenes knowledge for anyone interested in the technical side of dog photography.
Many people know that a fast shutter speed freezes the action. In the studio, it’s actually the flash that does the work.
Studio strobes, like my Bowens lights, produce an extremely short burst of light - often far faster than typical shutter speeds. It’s this brief flash duration that freezes motion in the frame, allowing me to capture sharp images even when a dog is shaking, jumping, or wiggling.
I set my camera to its maximum flash sync speed (around 1/200 sec), which ensures proper synchronization with the lights and lets me control how much ambient light is recorded.
This combination of flash and shutter settings works beautifully for professional studio dog portraits, especially with lively or young dogs, because the flash effectively stops their movement while the sync speed keeps the exposure clean and consistent.

Treats, Tricks & My Library of Ridiculous Noises
To capture expressive portraits - bright eyes, pricked ears, adorable head tilts - I ask mum and dad to bring along some of their dog's favourite treats and then of course I have my secret weopen - my extensive repertoire of silly noises
If you hear squeaks, honks, chirps or gentle whistles during your session… that’s me. I’ll happily make a fool of myself if it gets “the shot”!
This playful approach works brilliantly for studio dog photography sessions, and helps me capture each dog’s personality.

Studio Safety: Important for Everyone
Because my studio also hosts newborns, babies, and families, I have a few basic safety guidelines for dogs visiting the space. I ask that dogs are:
• House-trained
• Wormed
• Vaccinated
This ensures the studio stays clean, comfortable, and safe for all clients — both two-legged and four-legged.

Well Known for Newborn-and-Dog Portraits (Always Done Safely!)
I’m particularly well known for my newborn-with-dog photography, which results in some of the most touching and meaningful portraits I create. These images often become treasured family pieces - but the safety of the baby always comes first.
To achieve this safely, I photograph the newborn and the dog separately and then composite the final image during editing. At no stage is a newborn put at risk.
This safe approach allows families to enjoy beautiful newborn-and-dog portraits while knowing every precaution has been taken.

Why I Love Photographing Dogs
Dogs bring so much joy into the studio. Some are calm and regal, some are goofy clowns, some need gentle coaxing, and some try to sit right on my lap (I don’t mind!).
Every dog is different - and that’s what makes dog photography in Warwickshire so rewarding. Their personalities shine, and no two sessions are ever the same.
And after all… who could resist spending their day with children and animals? That old saying clearly never met me.
