Choosing the right style of newborn photography can feel overwhelming when you first start looking into it. In this blog, I explain the difference between posed and lifestyle approaches in the studio, how I combine both styles in a gentle, baby-led way, and why this allows me to photograph newborns beyond the traditional 2–3 week window. If you're considering newborn photography in Coventry or newborn photography in Solihull, I hope this helps you find the style that feels right for you and your family.

When families get in touch about newborn photography, they will sometimes ask whether I photograph babies in a posed style or a more natural, lifestyle approach. The answer is – both!
For many years, I photographed weddings alongside my newborn and family work. As any wedding photographer will tell you, those special days are full of emotion and fleeting little moments - and while I eventually chose to step away from weddings to focus fully on newborn and family portraiture, the style I loved most from those days remains with me. The quiet, unposed and candid moments - the way people look at each other without thinking about the camera, those real, natural connections.
And that’s also something I look for during newborn and family sessions today.
Yes, I do love those beautifully soft, curled newborn poses that are so classic and timeless, but I never force them. I prefer to let baby settle naturally and find positions that are comfortable for them. The result is posing that feels gentle, safe, and authentic.

What is Posed Newborn Photography?
Posed newborn photography is what many people think of when they imagine studio newborn portraits: babies sleeping soundly, wrapped snugly, and resting on cosy blankets or in tiny props. These images are often photographed during the early weeks of life, when babies are naturally more curled and sleepy.
As you may have read in previous blogs, my approach to posed photography is very much led by baby.
Anyone familiar with my work will notice the absence of some of the more popularised poses, such as the “froggy pose.” While this pose can be beautifully and safely executed by many talented newborn photographers, it’s never felt natural to me. I’ve always been drawn to positions that follow baby’s own natural movement and comfort. I want babies to look peaceful, relaxed, and themselves - not arranged into a shape they wouldn’t naturally hold.
So in my studio, baby leads. Always.

What is Lifestyle Newborn Photography?
Lifestyle newborn photography is softer and more natural. Instead of structured posing, the focus is on how baby wants to lie, in addition to capturing moments of connection, love and the tiny interactions that happen naturally between you and your baby.
Even though my sessions are studio-based, I create a calm, home-like atmosphere with gentle guidance rather than strict posing. This allows me to photograph:
• Baby in your arms
• With siblings
• With parents
• Snuggled in natural positions
The result is imagery that feels warm, emotional and beautifully real.

Why I Blend Both Styles
Most families love having both styles represented in their gallery - a handful of beautifully composed portraits alongside some more natural moments.
This balanced approach also means that I can confidently photograph babies beyond the traditional 2-3 week window.
Many parents worry they’ve “missed the newborn window” - but please don’t.
If your baby is older or simply more alert, prefers stretching out, or has begun to show personality, that’s something we can embrace and capture beautifully.
Older babies often give us:
• Gorgeous eye contact
• Adorable expressions
• Stronger connection in family images
• Sweet interaction with siblings
Every stage has something special.
A Calm, Baby-Led Experience
In my Fillongley studio, which is ideally located for families across Coventry, Solihull, Warwickshire and the West Midlands, my newborn sessions are:
• Relaxed and unhurried
• Entirely led by baby’s needs
• Safety-focused at all times
My aim is not just to create photographs you love, but to ensure you enjoy the experience.

So, Which Style Should You Choose?
You don’t have to choose!
When you come to my studio we work together to create images that reflect both your baby and your story.
If you love the dreamy, curled poses, we’ll include them where baby is happy to do so. If you are drawn to the natural, real moments, we’ll capture those too.
Your gallery will be a true reflection of your family.
