2024 was the year my hubby and I were promoted to the role of grandparents! Welcoming our gorgeous granddaughter has been the most wonderful experience, and I’ve absolutely loved spending time with her. It’s also been fascinating to explore the world of parenting from a different perspective - hearing from my daughter and seeing all the fantastic baby classes now available to new parents.

Alongside all the incredible experiences that come with having our granddaughter, I also have a wonderful source of inspiration and ideas for future blogs, which I hope will be of benefit to new parents.

This blog is about baby massage, something I'd not experienced as a new mum, but which is becoming increasingly popular today.

My daughter took our granddaughter to the Womb to World baby massage class in Rugby recently, and she couldn’t stop talking about how relaxed, informative, and accommodating the session was. Beyond learning plenty of practical techniques, she also enjoyed connecting with other new mums in such a friendly and supportive environment. From all accounts, my granddaughter also loved every second of it!

The brilliant woman behind Womb to World is Ellie Adnitt, a dedicated paediatric nurse who started her business nearly four years ago. Her journey

began with teaching hypnobirthing classes, inspired by her own positive experience with hypnobirthing during her son’s birth and recognising the lack of similar offerings in the local area.

Ellie’s passion for empowering parents didn’t stop there. She expanded her services to include baby massage and baby yoga classes, continuing to support families well beyond the newborn stage. One of the things I admire most about Ellie’s approach is how much she prioritises the mums themselves. Her classes are designed to be a joyful weekly highlight, offering new parents the chance to unwind, socialise, and feel truly cared for.

As a newborn photographer, I often liaise with businesses that provide services for new babies and parents, but to experience these from the client end, from a new grandparent’s perspective, has been eye-opening. It’s so inspiring to see the care and dedication of people like Ellie, who play such a big role in supporting families during this special time

The Benefits of Baby Massage Classes for Newborns

As a new parent, finding ways to bond with your baby and support their well-being is a joy, but can also be quite challenging. One increasingly popular option for families in the UK is a baby massage class. But what exactly are baby massage classes, and how can they benefit your newborn? Let’s look at the details.

What Are Baby Massage Classes?

Baby massage classes are guided sessions where parents learn techniques to gently massage their babies. These classes are often led by a certified instructor, focussing on safe and effective ways to promote bonding and aid relaxation.

Classes are typically held in small, intimate groups, making them an excellent opportunity to connect with other new parents.

The Benefits of Baby Massage for Newborns

1. Strengthened Parent-Baby Bond
Skin-to-skin contact during a massage creates a powerful connection between a parent and their baby. The physical closeness helps develop trust and security, essential for a baby’s emotional development.

2. Improved Sleep
Gentle massage techniques can help relax babies, easing them into better sleep patterns. Many parents report that regular massage before bedtime helps their baby fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer.

3. Relief from Discomfort
Baby massage can alleviate common issues such as colic, trapped wind, and constipation. Specific strokes applied to the tummy area may help stimulate digestion and reduce discomfort.

4. Enhanced Physical Development
Massaging a baby’s limbs and muscles supports circulation and coordination. It’s a gentle way to stimulate the nervous system and promote overall physical growth.

5. Boosted Immune System
Studies suggest that baby massage can support a developing immune system by reducing stress hormones and encouraging healthy circulation.

6. Reduced Stress and Anxiety
Massage triggers the release of oxytocin, the “happy hormone” in both baby and parent, helping to reduce anxiety and create a calming experience for both.

7. Awareness of Baby’s Cues
By regularly practicing massage, parents become more attuned to their baby’s body language and non-verbal cues, helping to develop a deeper understanding of their baby’s needs.

Finding a Class Near You

Baby massage classes have become increasingly popular in recent years and as a result, are quite easy to find across the UK. If you have no joy with an internet search, local resources such as community centres, mother-and-baby groups, and health visitor recommendations should be able to point you in the right direction. Some private instructors also offer online or one-to-one sessions for added flexibility.

If you’re local to Rugby and want to try out one of Ellie’s classes, you can contact her via email at [email protected]. Her website is: https://wombtoworld.co.uk/
