If you’re a parent or soon-to-be parent considering a special way to celebrate your little one’s first birthday, you may have heard of "cake smash" photography. It’s a popular choice among families in Coventry, Warwickshire, and across the UK, providing a fun and memorable experience for both the child and their family.
What Exactly Is a Cake Smash?
A cake smash is a delightful and messy photo session, usually celebrating a baby’s first birthday. The idea is simple: place a beautiful cake in front of the birthday child and let them explore, play, and dig into it with curiosity, all while capturing those wonderful, sensory and candid moments on camera. It’s an excellent way to celebrate a first birthday!
Why Is Cake Smash Photography So Popular?
There are plenty of reasons why cake smash photography has taken the UK by storm:
1. Capturing Milestones: A baby’s first birthday is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and a cake smash adds a unique, playful twist to traditional portraits.
2. Adorable Keepsakes: The resulting photos are usually bursting with personality and provide great memories for years to come.
3. Family Fun: Parents and siblings often join in the laughter, making it an event for everyone to enjoy.
The Cake Smash and Splash Process at Ellie J Photography
At Ellie J Photography, I aim to make your cake smash session as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Here’s what you can expect when you book with me:
1. Family Portraits: If you’d like, we start the session with family portraits, capturing those precious moments with everyone included.
2. Clean Baby Photos: Before the messy fun begins, I take clean photos of your baby in their best outfit. These provide a lovely contrast to the cake smash images and give you classic portraits to treasure.
3. Cake Smash Fun: Once your baby changes into their cake smash outfit, it’s time for the main event. Whether they dive straight in or take their time exploring, I’ll be there to capture every messy, glorious moment.
4. Bubble Bath Finish: After the cake smash, we move to a mini roll-top tub for a bubble bath session. This not only results in adorable photos of your little one splashing and giggling, but it also ensures you leave with a clean baby!
5. Wind Down Time: Once your baby is squeaky clean, if they're still up for photos, we finish with a few images of them in a cosy bathrobe. The little hooded ones are especially adorable and make for some really cute final shots.
Designing the Perfect Cake Smash with Ellie J Photography
At Ellie J Photography, I have crafted many cake smash setups for families across Coventry, Warwickshire, and beyond. Here are some of the options I have used:
• Pure White Background: (with or without flowers). Perfect for families seeking a clean, timeless look. The pristine white highlights the baby’s expressions and cake-covered hands, capturing the innocence of the moment.
• Dark Wood Backdrops: For a warm, rustic aesthetic, dark wooden backgrounds offer a charming contrast to bright frosting and colourful outfits.
• Bright Balloon Arches: These vibrant, cheerful setups create a party-like atmosphere with bold pops of colour.
How to Prepare for a Cake Smash Session
If you book a cake smash session with Ellie J Photography, I will send you a PDF booklet detailing everything you need to bring. Here are a few tips to ensure everything runs smoothly on your baby's cake smash day.
• Choose a Cake: (Some photographers will provide one). As mum to a son with a severe nut allergy, I have always asked parents to provide their own cake and recommend simple buttercream cakes, as they’re soft enough for little hands to grab and eat. Avoid anything that could be a choking hazard or be sharp. Finally, chocolate cakes don't make the best choice - all that brown icing may taste great, but it doesn't look brilliant smeared all over little hands and faces in the finished photos!
• Plan the Outfit: From birthday crowns to tutu dresses, outfits can make or break the session’s look. I have a few simple outfits that my clients are welcome to use or alternatively, I’m happy to offer guidance on what works best should you wish to bring your own.
• Trust the Process: Babies can be unpredictable, and that’s part of the magic. Whether they dive straight in or approach the cake cautiously, the resulting photos will capture their personality perfectly.
