The Art of Family Posing: Capturing the Perfect Beauty of Chaos!
Let’s be honest - getting the whole family to pose for a photo is a little like trying to herd cats. Someone’s always pulling a face, a toddler is on the run, or just when you think you’ve got the shot, your youngest decides to give a new definition to “photo bomb.” Don't worry! I've written this blog to show how family posing can actually be an art form—and fun! With a little creativity, patience, and a sense of humor, we’ll create beautiful images that capture the heart of your family—chaos and all!
1. Embrace the Imperfection
Forget perfection. Some of the most memorable photos come from those un-planned for moments for example, when your child has an attack of the giggles or your partner is trying to haul your dog back into frame. These little quirks bring out the personality of your family, so don’t stress when things don’t go exactly to plan. Sometimes, the best photos are the unplanned ones, where everyone is relaxed and just being themselves.
Pro Tip: Make it a game!
I love starting sessions with a little game, getting the children to tickle daddy and vice-versa, “who can pull the funniest face,” or I've even been known to blow a raspberry and innocently ask my youngest clients "was that you or your daddy?"Not only does it loosen everyone up, but it also brings out genuine smiles that no forced pose could ever achieve.
2. The Power of Connection
Family posing is all about connection—whether it’s a look, a touch, or simply being close to one another. I often encourage families to interact during the shoot rather than standing stiffly side by side. Hug your child, laugh with your partner, and let your arms fall naturally around each other. This creates genuine emotion, and it’s these connections that make your family portraits truly special.
Pro Tip: The “group hug” pose
If you’re not sure where to start, I always recommend a group hug! It’s a simple pose that immediately brings everyone together, creating warmth and closeness. Bonus points if you add a little squeeze—it’s guaranteed to produce some giggles!
3. Mix It Up With Posing Levels
One of the most common mistakes in family photography is when everyone is photographed standing stiffly in a straight line. I like to break that up by playing with levels and having some family members sit while others stand, or having the kids on someone’s lap. This adds variety and keeps the composition visually interesting.
Pro Tip: The “triangle” technique
A secret weapon of family photographers is the triangle composition. This simply means arranging your family so that heads (or bodies) form a loose triangle shape. It’s a subtle trick that creates balance and draws attention to each person in the shot. Plus, it keeps things from looking too rigid.
4. Let the Kids Be Kids
If you’ve got little ones, you know they won’t sit still for long, and that’s okay! Instead of trying to make them pose perfectly, let them move and play. Some of the sweetest moments come from kids being their playful, unpredictable selves. A child dancing, running, or even just holding their favorite toy can make for magical photos. After all, the energy and spirit of your little ones are what makes your family unique!
Pro Tip: Turn chaos into charm
If your kids are being a bit wiggly, encourage them to engage with the session. Ask them to hold hands, give Mum or Dad a big hug, or show me their favorite silly pose. When they feel involved, they’re more likely to cooperate—and we’ll capture some fantastic, candid moments along the way.
5. Bring Out the Personality
Family portraits should reflect who you are! Let your personalities shine through. If your kids love superheroes, why not let them wear their favorite cape for a few shots? Got a family pet? Bring them along! The best poses are the ones where your family feels like… well, your family.
Pro Tip: Make it a storytelling session
During the session, I love asking families to share stories or play little games that help bring out their personalities. Whether it’s “what’s the silliest thing Dad ever did?” or “who can make Mum laugh the hardest?”—it’s a fun way to relax and capture everyone’s true character.
6. Relax and Have Fun
At the end of the day, the art of family posing is all about having fun and creating memories together. Don’t worry about getting the “perfect” pose—there’s no such thing! What’s perfect is capturing the real essence of your family, whether that’s playful, silly, or heartwarming. Trust the process, relax, and enjoy your time in front of the camera. If you book a family portrait session with me I’ll be there to guide you through and make sure you walk away with some fantastic images, otherwise I hope this blog gives you some inspiration for capturing your own family portrait.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to breathe!
Taking a deep breath helps relax everyone, especially if things start to feel overwhelming. I always remind families that we’re here to have fun, and nothing needs to be rushed. The best photos often happen when everyone takes a moment to breathe, regroup, and smile.
Final Thoughts
Family posing is about more than just getting everyone to smile at the camera—it’s about capturing the connections, the laughter, and even the little bit of chaos that makes your family unique. So next time you’re in front of the camera, don’t stress about perfect poses. Just be yourselves, and let the magic happen!
