How do I choose a Newborn Photographer?

Daddy and baby.Daddy and baby.Father cradling his newborn son. Newborn Photography. The newborn photography industry has dramatically increased in popularity over recent years, and as parents looking for a suitable photographer, you may find yourself facing an endless list of photography businesses, all vying for your attention.

I don't have to tell you that the choice of newborn photographer for your baby is extremely important, as you will want to ensure that your baby is completely safe during the session in addition, of course, to capturing those precious early days in a set of gorgeous images.

You will need to seek recommendations and do some research; find out about a photographer's experience and most importantly, what safety training they have had and what safe methods of work they use. I have created a list of potential questions to consider when choosing your newborn photographer, if you cannot find the answers to these through your research don't be afraid to ask your shortlisted photographers in person. You will find these questions here.

Review their portfolio to get an understanding of the style and quality of their work, look for consistency in the images (more in my blog, link below). Seek reviews and recommendations, check online and ask friends or relatives who have used newborn photographers about their experiences. Although not essential, is the photographer a member of any professional photography associations? Furthermore, if they are a qualified member of such an association (for 0707 example, the British Institute of Professional Photography), then their work has been judged and found to be of a professional standard. Qualified members of a photography association will also be bound to adhere to that body's rules of conduct which will include, for example, things like a requirement to have the necessary insurances in place to run a professional photography business.
