WHY IS NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT?

Since its earliest days photography has played an important role in the documentation of history and preservation of memories.

As a newborn and family photographer, I am a true believer in the importance of photography and in particular, newborn photography, for many reasons.

Babies change rapidly during their first weeks and newborn photography captures memories of this amazing time, from delicate facial expressions (a windy smile is still a smile!) to tiny fingers and toes. During the roller coaster ride that can be early parenthood, these little details can be there and gone in what seems like a moment. A newborn photography session can ensure they are never forgotten and that they will become cherished memories.

Newborns grow and develop at an astonishing rate, and a newborn photography session will provide a visual documentation of this. In many ways, a set of professional newborn photographs serves as a time capsule, allowing parents to reminisce about those early days; they are able to witness the transformation of their child from a tiny, curled up newborn to a more alert and responsive baby. I always like to photograph a newborn in mum or dad's hands to provide a lasting record of just how tiny they once were. 

I also see my newborn photography sessions as a celebration of family. I always include photos with parents, siblings, even the family dog if wanted! What a wonderful way to commemorate the creation of a new family unit. These images capture all the love, connection and joy shared amongst family members. The emotional connection between a new parent and their newborn, or an older child and their new sibling, is profound and a joy to capture. I like to think that my images will provide families with a wonderful reminder of these feelings when they look back on them in future years.

A newborn photographer will often use their artistic skills during a session, adding an extra layer of uniqueness to an image and creating a work of art which will be treasured for years to come. Images can also be personalised using props or mementoes that are of importance to the family, making the memories even more special.

In today's modern connected world, newborn images can be quickly and easily shared with friends and family digitally as well as in physical prints. This allows loved ones near and far to share in the joy and excitement of having a new addition to the family as soon as the images are ready. My clients will often use one of their session images as a birth announcement.

As children grow, they enjoy looking back at their own baby pictures. Newborn photography therefore provides a visual history for the child, allowing them to see for themselves just how much they've changed and providing a glimpse into the early days of their life.

Newborn photography can also help families to remember loved ones who may no longer be around. I have often photographed new babies with a sentimental object representing a lost family member, and it is a wonderful way to celebrate the new addition to a family whilst remembering any loved ones who sadly aren't there to celebrate.

Newborn photography is a celebration of new life, love and family. It has the ability to transform chaotic early days of a child's life into enduring images that families will treasure for a lifetime.
